Wizz Air Doubles Down on Milan: 10th Aircraft and 5 New Routes

Wizz Air is expanding its Milan Malpensa base with a 10th A321neo and five new international routes to Bilbao, Dortmund, Palma, Cluj and Iași.

Wizz Air has announced a significant expansion at Milan Malpensa Airport, adding a 10th Airbus A321neo aircraft to its base from 25 October 2026 and launching five new international routes. The move is set to increase capacity by around 500,000 seats annually, cementing Milan as one of the airline's most important European hubs.

Five New Routes From Milan Malpensa

Starting between May and October 2026, Wizz Air will connect Milan with five new destinations across Europe:

  • Bilbao, Spain – connecting Italy's fashion capital with the Basque Country's cultural gem
  • Dortmund, Germany – a new link to one of western Germany's key industrial cities
  • Palma de Mallorca, Spain – perfect timing for summer sun-seekers heading to the Balearics
  • Cluj-Napoca, Romania – expanding connections to Transylvania's vibrant student city
  • Iași, Romania – a new route to north-eastern Romania, popular with the large Romanian diaspora in Italy

Frequencies will range from three weekly flights to daily services depending on the route, giving travellers flexible options throughout the season.

Wizz Air's Broader Italian Ambitions

The expansion goes beyond just new routes. With the addition of the 10th aircraft, Milan Malpensa will grow to 47 routes across 21 countries, making it Wizz Air's second largest base in Italy. The airline plans to offer nearly 5.5 million seats out of Malpensa in 2026, a growth of almost 20% compared to the previous year.

Wizz Air is also launching domestic routes to Naples and Palermo, rounding out a comprehensive network that now spans leisure, city-break, and VFR (visiting friends and relatives) markets. The airline aims to create 40 direct jobs and over 350 indirect roles across the local supply chain.

What This Means for Travellers

Increased competition at Milan Malpensa is good news for travellers — more capacity typically translates to lower fares and more choice. Wizz Air is positioning itself as the main challenger to Ryanair at the airport, and this summer battle should keep prices competitive on many key European corridors.

If you're planning a trip from Milan this summer — whether it's a beach break in Mallorca, a city trip to Bilbao, or visiting family in Romania — it's worth comparing all available options.
